Living with Chronic Lyme Disease at age 15 is a hard thing. I miss out on a lot. I can’t go to school full time, I can’t work right now, I can’t volunteer hours like I normally do for the service organization I am involved in, I can’t hang out with my friends unless they come to my house, I can’t go on a simple walk, and a trip to the mall is not in my foreseeable future! So when my boyfriend asked me to prom, by writing “PROM?” on a pizza in sauce, I was quite nervous about how the night would go since I couldn't even do ordinary things.
We planned well in advance that we would get pictures done the day before at Photography by Christine, that way I wouldn't get too tired. We did that and pictures went great. Prom day came and my boyfriend brought me roses and spent the day with me as my mom helped me get ready. We ate at The Water Street Grill, it was fabulous, we went to the school for the Grand March, and we had a fantastic night. I looked just like Cinderella, it was perfect!
I was home by 11:30 pm…which I realize is quite early for most, but I am sick. I went to bed and by 2:00 I woke up in the worst pain. I was so dizzy that when I went to stand up fell and hit my head on my dresser. I eventually made it to my mom’s room where I was in so much pain the rest of the night. She got right up and took care of me like she always does. She always gets up in the middle of the night, no matter what, and takes care of me. She gets me breathing treatments, pains medications, drinks, my phone charger because you know it’s important to text my boyfriend while I am screaming in pain, and she rubs my back. I told her I knew I was going to end up hurting that much, I just can’t do anything without ending up and pain so of course prom would be no different. The coach turned back into a pumpkin at midnight, but I knew what to expect.
